A beginner's guide to APM - but not just for beginners

In response to numerous requests for some back-to-basics APM briefings at the 2014 AGM, the Aberdeen Chapter held its highest attended event of the year with over 80 project management professionals and aspirants in attendance.

Hosted at the Robert Gordon University on the evening of Wednesday 22nd October 2014, the event focused on explaining what the APM has to offer to the wider PM community.

With speakers Nick Jones, Membership Development Manager from APM HQ, and Neil Harkin, Operations Director of training provider 20|20 Business Insight, the event was aimed at (but not limited to) new or aspiring project managers. The event also welcomed more experienced delegates.

The session addressed a number of topics ranging from the associations history and future through to membership benefits and qualifications. Of particular interest to the audience were the development opportunities available. This appealed to both veteran members intending to develop their teams in line with the APM qualification structure, as well as newcomers to the APM seeking a greater understanding of the Five Dimensions of Professionalism and the routes available for membership and progression.  Due to popular demand, the session also addressed specific guidance on the RPP (Registered Project Professional), the standard which is due to become the recognised Chartered professional award, as well as an update on the Chartered application to the Privy Council. 

All levels of experience were represented, from the host universitys MSc Project Management programme students, (accompanied by their course leader and Aberdeen Chapter committee member, Langes Supramaniam), through to junior and veteran professionals from energy, utility and public sector organisations in Aberdeen.

Feedback has already proven the benefits of this event providing a valuable forum for discussion, questions and the opportunity to demystify the process and offer clear, defined and pragmatic approach to APM membership, qualifications and awards. 

Due to the success of this event it is now proposed that similar sessions be included in future Aberdeen Chapter planning both as a general event and more specific corporate member lunch and learn sessions.
