Bombardier wins 1bn Crossrail contract
Derby-based Bombardier has won a 1bn contract to provide trains for the Crossrail project.
Sixty five trains will be manufactured and assembled at Bombardier's Derby plant for the London-based Crossrail service, which is set to open in 2018.
The deal is set to create 760 manufacturing jobs and 80 apprenticeships, according to the Department for Transport (DfT).
Crossrail will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow Airport in the west, to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east, providing faster journey times and up to 24 trains per hour between Paddington and Whitechapel during the peak.
Dr Francis Paonessa, managing director of Bombardier Transportation UK, said: We are absolutely delighted to have been recommended as the winning bidder for the Crossrail rolling stock and depot contract and look forward to closing the contract with the customer.
This is a resounding endorsement of our proposed BOMBARDIER AVENTRA train for Crossrail, which has proudly been designed and developed in the UK as an iconic and world-technology leading train for London.
Todays decision is a credit to the efforts of our entire workforce in the UK, including our 1,600 strong Derby-based design, engineering and manufacturing team who form a global centre of excellence for the rail industry, as well as our outstanding maintenance teams who support train operators right across the country and particularly in London as demonstrated during the London 2012 Olympics.
The DfT also reported that around 74 per cent of the 1bn would stay in the UK economy.
The Crossrail project recently reached its halfway point after running for five years.
