The team delivering Nepals largest hydro project has reached a major milestone after breaking through a 2,208-metre tunnel ahead of schedule.

The Sanima Mai Hydropower Project in Ilam aims to harness the regions water flow and generate 22 megawatts (MW) of power adding 3.5 per cent to Nepals installed hydropower capacity of 650MW.

Engineer Bhoj Raj Poudel said: Were very happy to see a successful breakthrough in this Siwalik rock massif, another first for Nepal.
Conditions were uncertain as this was the longest tunnel so far in the Nepalese lower zone of the Himalayas.
