This presentation will discuss the digital transformation currently taking place at Britain's national mapping agency. A geospatial world leader that is upgrading its business for the digital era through the use of bleeding-edge Software Engineering practices and customer driven development whilst powering the geospatial industry through location based data.
Undertaking the Digital Transformation using a lean customer development approach, Agile Software Engineering has played a key role in enabling a significant cultural change. Collaboration and customer data is now valued above process. Productivity in the development team has increased resulting in faster customer delivery, lower engineering and customer costs, better customer prioritisation and higher product and service quality across B2C, B2B and B2G markets.
Within the engineering teams, the use of modern architectures and patterns is paying dividends. Micro-services, containerisation and self-healing capability have been instrumental in achieving a fast and flexible delivery architecture. Automation through continuous integration and continuous delivery has improved software quality and speed into production. Working with IT operations through a collaborative DevOps approach has proven to break down old working barriers within the IT department; and Developers are happy that they have an integrated developer experience and infrastructure is provisioned now faster than ever before through code. Developer tool workflow has been modernised, resulting in an efficient and accelerated software development process suitable for the digital era where speed to market is so important.
To meet business demands, and provide a competitive proposition back to the business, engineering capacity has been increased through strategic relationships with external software development companies to enable resource flex. Not a traditional outsourced customer-supplier relationship, rather, partner relationships where Agile Software Engineering is being practiced at distance using virtually co-located remote teams with some outstanding results!
The digital transformation is now being embraced outside of engineering where Agile approaches are scaling into non-IT business areas.
